08 Claude Monet

The Artist’s Garden in Argenteuil (A Corner of the Garden with Dahlias), 1873, by Claude Monet (National Gallery of Art, Washington: Gift of Janice H. Levin, in Honor of the 50th Anniversary of the National Gallery of Art)

This is the final week that you can see Discovering the Impressionists: Paul Durand-Ruel and the New Painting exhibition in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. It ends September 13, 2015.

The first impressionist artist I want to tell you about is Claude Monet.

Chinese character: 莫
Chinese character: 內Simplified Chinese: 内
There are two main transliterated names for Claude Monet. The one I prefer is 莫內 (mò nèi). It sounds closer to Monet than the other transliteration, 莫奈 (mò nài). 莫奈 reminds me of 無奈 (wú nài), meaning helpless.
