10 Edgar Degas

The Dance Foyer at the Opera on the rue Le Peletier, 1872, by Hilaire-Germain-Edgar Degas (Musée d’Orsay, Paris: Bequest of Count Isaac de Camondo, 1911)

This is the final week that you can see Discovering the Impressionists: Paul Durand-Ruel and the New Painting exhibition in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. It ends September 13, 2015.

The two most common transliterations for Degas are 德加 (dé jiā), my preference, and 竇加 (dòu jiā).

Chinese character: 德
Chinese character: 加
From 德 (dé), virtue, you can learn 道德 (dào dé), meaning ethics or moral.

With 加 (jiā), remember we talked about 加州 (jiā zhōu) and 亞美利加 (yà měi lì jiā). Do you remember all these characters?

竇 (dòu) is a hole or the sinus.
